Chelsea Close To Signing Chilwell While Leiscester To Draft In Champion League Players

Published

Chelsea look to be edging closer to the signing of Ben Chilwell.

According to The  City Times, Leiscester increasingly resigned to Chilwell leaving and have stepped up their search for a new leaf back

Brendan Rodgers is said to have earmarked Ryan Bertrand, who has one year left on his contract at Southampton, as Chilwell’s replacement.

Bertrand – a Champions League winner at Chelsea – is well known to Rodgers with the pair having worked together in the academy at Stamford Bridge.

Chilwell is keen to join Chelsea and Leicester are reported to have told their Premier League rivals they want a fee of around £75million for the England international– the same they sold Harry Maguire to Manchester United for last summer.

Despite the financial fall-out from the coronavirus pandemic, Chelsea are backing Frank Lampard heavily in the transfer market this summer.

Hakim Ziyech is joining from Ajax, while Tino Werner is also set to complete a switch from RB Leipzig and Chilwell is Lampard’s next target.

Chelsea could fund their deal for Chilwell, 23, by selling Marcos Alonso and Emerson Palmieri, The Times report says.

Lampard is also said to be willing to listen to offers for Andreas Christensen and Kurt Zouma, who is on Everton and Tottenham’s radar

Roger Federer Withdraws Ahead Of Upcoming Tournament

Roger Federer has withdrawn from the upcoming Australian Open as the 20-time major champion continues to work his way back to full fitness following a knee injury.

Federer has not played since losing to eventual champion Novak Djokovic in the semifinals of the 2020 Australian Open at the start of this year, having twice undergone knee surgery since that tournament.

The 39-year-old Swiss superstar will not travel to Melbourne for the rescheduled 2021 Australian Open, which will take place from Feb. 8-21.

“Roger has decided not to play the 2021 Australian Open. He has made strong progress in the last couple of months with his knee and his fitness,” Tony Godsick said in a statement to The Associated Press.

Federer is a six-time winner of the Australian Open, with his last triumph coming in 2018.

Ranked fifth on the ATP Tour, Federer had a 5-1 win-loss record before his 2020 campaign was cut short.

The 2021 Australian Open, meanwhile, will take place in February instead of its typical Jan. 18 start date amid the coronavirus pandemic.

There will be warmup events in Melbourne after traveling players serve 14-day quarantine periods in Victoria that permit them to train for a maximum of five hours per day at a secure facility.

There will be three ATP warmup events in Melbourne, too, including the ATP Cup from Feb. 1-5.

The Adelaide International has been relocated to Melbourne and will run alongside an additional ATP 250 tournament in the city from Jan. 31 to Feb. 6

Edie Hearn Wants Future Hall Of Famer NEXT For James Tennyson

Published

on

The Belfast lightweight stopped Welshman Gavin Gwynne in six to complete his collection of sub-World title belts and promoter Eddie Hearn wants to quickly move towards more honours.

Having claimed the Lonsdale belt, Tennyson is obliged to defend against Liam Walsh (brother of previous defeater, Ryan) at the next available opportunity. The Norfolk fighte’s team are keen on this but the bout itself looks extremely unlikely.

Hearn instead is eyeing a fight with the likes of Venezuelan legend Jorge Linares.

34-year-old Linares is a four-time three-weight world champion and the only man to have ever knocked down Vasyl Lomachenko. However, like Tennyson, the South American has shown frailties throughout his career – most recently last year when a move to light welter was unceremoniously destroyed in a round by the unheralded Pablo Cesar Cano.

Having claimed two wins since this shock defeat, Linares is set to face former Pajo Hyland foe Javier Fortuna on August 28th in California on a Golden Boy DAZN card.

Another name proposed by Hearn was Belgian Francesco Patera [23(8)-3(0)] – who had been due to face Italian veteran Devis Boschiero for the WBA ‘interim’ belt before the COVID crisis forced a cancellation.

The Italy-based Patera sensationally defeated Lewis Ritson back in 2018 to win the European title and also defeated Tennyson’s MHD stablemate Paul Hyland Jr last summer.

Speaking after Tennyson’s win last night, Hearn said “I love the Jorge Linares fight. James is dangerous against anybody.”

“While James is in there, he has dynamite in his hands. He keeps coming forward and is always exciting.”

Outlining his plans for ‘The Assassin’, Hearn described how “I want to see him push on now. He has done British title level.”

“I want to see him up a level. For me, I’d like to see him step up, try and win the the European title, and maybe even move towards a World title eliminator.”

“A great fight for him is up against [Francesco] Patera for the European title. Particularly the Patera fight, European lightweight title – maybe the interim world title – for James Tennyson.”

Edis Tatli and Gianluca Ceglia will contest the vacant belt in Finland next weekend.

“These are the fights for James Tennyson you are going to see light up the place. What an entertainer and what a fighter. Just what the fans want to see.”
